The next three lectures, now under normal circumstances, were held by Dr Graham at the university. On the fourth occasion, though, the doctor was on duty at the stadium, and since he wouldn’t have made it back to the university on time, he agreed with the students that they should meet at the stadium again, and in that environment they would focus on the practical aspects of the material. Alex broke out in a cold sweat when she heard about this in the lecture hall. She spent the following four days in a state of restless expectation.

She had met Nick at the weekend, and as usual they had all had lunch together in the Woodville house. They had had a cosy and relaxing time as always. Nick was made to feel at home by both of her parents. The conversations, gestures and topics they discussed were all the usual things. Only Alexis was a bit different. She was more quiet than usual. She was more observant, and self-appraising. Mostly, she watched Dominic. She tried to see him with the eyes of an outsider, analysing him matter-of-factly. What interested her the most, and what she noticed consciously for the first time, was the boy’s attitude to her. It was hard to find any fault in it. Nick was kind, open, and pleasant. Occasionally he was a bit absent-minded, but never impolite. And it would have been wrong to call him rude. With a few exceptions, he mostly tackled the topics of medicine and the university, but that was hardly a surprise to Alex. She knew that Nick would one day become a passionate doctor with strong convictions, who would not be motivated by money or other privileges. And this was another thing she couldn’t regard as something negative in him. What was more, this was a feature she even respected and loved in him. As for their relationship, not all of her new discoveries had filled her with joy. One time during the meal, when Nick casually put a hand on her arm while explaining something to Mr Woodville, Alex realised with surprise that she felt nothing at all. She stared at his fingers on her arm for a while, and tried to guess if it had always been that way– that she had felt nothing when he touched her – or whether it was a new development triggered by Nathaniel Cruz’s sudden re-appearance in her life. Her musings were distracted when she caught sight of Ronnie gazing at her from the other side of the round-shaped dinner table. The young girl was the only one who took note of her sister’s unusual behaviour, and watched her with a little worry. When Alex noticed the strange way her sister was eyeing her, she sent her a smile, and winked. This time, though, Veronic didn’t smile back.

After a little while, when they had finished lunch, they all went into the back garden. Ronnie had had a few bad days, and she had been in pain.
